Secrets of Tomorrow

When my first husband left me and the kids on the mission field, I was devastated.

I totally did not see it coming.

It was a shock.

I felt like I was less than worthless.

I was far from home, far from family, alone, but not really alone.

• I had God.
• I had my kids.
• And a dear sister from the local church stepped up to the plate and played the role of a second mom for me, since my mom was not there.

Renée knew that in my grief, I was not eating well, so she sent me home with a brioche (sweet bread) and sweetly told me to eat a little bit of steak.

She gave me a special necklace to remember her by, which I still have.

She and her husband, Olivier, watched the kids for a few hours at least once.

And, another day they took me and the kids on a special day trip to the mountains to pick mushrooms, which I had never had the opportunity to do before nor have I since then. After picking mushrooms, they took us to a quaint little restaurant with a huge fireplace and treated us to hot chocolate, and on leaving the restaurant, the first snow of the season began to fall. It was a magical sort of day with such a sweet couple.

A few days ago I learned that they were both taken from this earth in a fatal car crash back in January of this year.

At first I couldn’t believe it. But, as you can imagine, since it was verified that it was so, I have had some episodes of deep sadness. And it has caused my mind to go to places that it does not go often enough.

One of the biggest lessons I have been drawing from this is to remember that life is short.

We are not guaranteed another day,

• another day to live,
• another day to love,
• another day to call someone precious to us and let them know how much they mean to us.

Once death comes knocking on our door, it’s too late to do whatever it was that we were putting off.

Tomorrow is a day we can plan for but not boast about.

 

Scripture says,

“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”  Prov. 27:1 NIV

and,

“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’  Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”  James 4:13, 14 NIV

Perhaps someone reading here has never given much thought to eternity and the hereafter.

If that’s you, please do not put it off. 

“Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.”  2Corinthians 6:2  NLT

You  never know if you have another day to make sure you are on good terms with God.

Jesus gave His life on the cross because this was (and continues to be) IMPORTANT!

If you could have gone to spend eternity with God in a wonderful place called Heaven by any other way, it would have been just absurd for Him to go through such agony on your behalf.

But it was the only way.  (John 14:6)

He paid for your pardon, and in order for the pardon He offers you from the judgment for your sins to be yours, you have to accept that pardon from God on His terms, believing that Jesus died for you, and receiving Him into your life as Savior and Lord.  (Romans 6:23; Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8,9)

Just as a prisoner cannot buy a pardon that is already being offered, so you do not have to do anything to buy the pardon that God offers you.

All it takes is just humbly receiving it as a gift.

God wants a relationship with you.  He is calling you now to receive Him.

TODAY.

Please don’t put it off until tomorrow.

You don’t know if you have a tomorrow.

Perhaps you already know Jesus as your Savior and Lord.

If that’s you, you probably have friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors in your life, and even strangers that cross your path, who don’t yet have a relationship with Jesus.

Please don’t just assume that they will still be there tomorrow, or next week, or next year for you to talk with them about it.

Pray for them, and ask the Lord to help you know how to go about telling them how they can know your Savior before it is too late.
