Two years ago, as the New Year arrived, I heard for the first time about choosing one word for the year instead of making a New Year’s resolution (which I usually didn’t bother to do.)
I felt the Lord was giving me the word “LISTEN”. It’s something that most of us need to work on, whether in our relationship with others or with God. Check out my thoughts on that here.
Then, last year, as I listened to God, I felt He was giving me the words “ABIDE” or “DWELL”. You can find my post on that HERE. (Warning: I just reread it and was convicted of, um, not doing such a great job, so if you don’t want the Spirit of God to stir your heart to action, you’d better not read it. But then again,….maybe we could all use this?)
Anyway, this year, after a year of trying to listen to God and of struggling to abide in Him, I believe He is giving me the word “Speak”.
But God has impressed on me the importance of the order that He gave these words:
- Listen,
- then Dwell,
- then Speak – in that order.
James tells us, in his book of wisdom,
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19
So, while I believe God wants me to speak up more than I used to, He keeps on running through my mind the words that Samuel spoke the first time he heard from the LORD:
“Speak, Lord, thy servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10
So, the speaking that He wants me to do is that which I have heard from Him while I was dwelling in Him and listening to His voice as He speaks to me.
So far, these are the 4 things I believe I am hearing Him tell me about speaking:
- Speak what God is telling you to say without fear. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NASB)
- Speak truth and reconciliation resulting in unity and love. (Eph. 4:15; Matt. 5:24; Luke 17:3)
- Speak encouragement, graciousness, and kindness. “And never let ugly or hateful words come from your mouth, but instead let your words become beautiful gifts that encourage others; do this by speaking words of grace to help them.” (Ephesians 4:29 TPT), and
- Speak gratefulness and rejoicing. (Phil.4:4; John 15:10,11)
He also reminds me that:
“Out of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
So I absolutely must daily take the time to draw close to my Heavenly Father in prayer and the study of His Word, so that my heart can be freshly anointed by His Spirit to speak that which pleases Him.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your invitation to draw near to You and to spend time in communion with You. Thank You for the privilege of sitting at Your feet and of listening to You speak Your words of wisdom and love. Help us to dwell in You, listening daily to Your precious voice, and walking in obedience to that which You speak to us there. Help us to keep our hearts open to You, to hear Your words of teaching and of loving correction when we fall short. Help us to speak Your words from a pure heart. May our words be gifts of love to all those to whom You send us. Help us to speak joyful words from a grateful heart, come what may. Take away our fear that binds us and keeps us from speaking that which You are leading us to say. And help us to seek reconciliation with those who have hurt us or whom we have offended, for You have said, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” Psalm 133:1 May You, Lord, be glorified and exalted through our lives and through our words. In Jesus’ name I ask it, Amen.

Wow! The last verse was so powerful for me. God has been on me about truly sharing – great victories and tragic losses, but I have to be extra sure to stay buried in His Word because whatever is in me is what will spill out.

Amen, Brittany! I’m praying for you to be able to do that consistently. May you feel the sweet Presence of Him who encompasses round about those who fear the LORD. Psalm 34:7. How sweet to be loved by Him who bothers to know when we sit down and when we rise up, who is intimately acquainted with all our ways! Psalm 139:2,3

This is great. I liked when you said, “Listen,
then Dwell,
then Speak – in that order.”
I like your bullet points, especially “Speak what God is telling you to say without fear.” Also, I think that prayer and the continual reading of His Word is vital to us as Christians in order to hear from God.
I’m actually partaking in the 2018 Bible Challenge with my church where we read 2 chapters of the New Testament each day. Tomorrow, we start Mark 1-2.
I absolutely love your prayer at the end of the post.

One of my verses for the year (I have a few) is Proverbs 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. This is for me.. to THINK, to be INTENTIONAL with my words. Thank you for such a great reminder

I love your verse! Law of kindness…. That’s good! Many times I have prayed that God give me a gracious heart so that gracious words will be on the tip of my tongue. I think, though, that it’s a daily journey, so like you said, we have to make a daily effort to reset our default mindset. Thanks for your visit! 🙂

Thank you for sharing yourself via your writing and blog. May God continue to bless you!
I also started to adopt a word of the year three years ago. That year was Generosity, last year was Grace, and this year is Love. See my post “new names” to read about this year’s word.
Thanks again for your loving witness.

Oh boy! Can you imagine how the world would change if God’s people would learn to do just as you said here… Listen. Dwell. Speak. In that order, indeed!

Yes, Karen, that would be great! I guess we can pray toward that end; unfortunately, it’s not so easily accomplished, as we are all human and prone to messing up. Praise God for His mercy and grace and the chances to try again.

I was just thinking about the order of my last three one words, too… Restore, Invest, Shine. To me there seems to be cyclical intentionality to them. Which shouldn’t surprise us at all! Should it? May God bless you as you follow His lead and speak His truth!

You’re right, Liz! If God gave us our words, then we can be sure He has a plan!
Thanks for your blessing, and may the Lord help you shine for Him!

I loved this! I especially love how you were able to make the connection in the order of which God was calling your focus for each new year! This gives me some perspective into my own One Word!
Listen, Abide, and then Speak! Such a great word!

I enjoyed reading about your word for the year. My word last year was “voice” which was similar. Listening to God’s voice and then speaking out more in certain situations and finding my own voice were things I tried to focus on throughout the year, and it’s great to look back on how God used that word. Look forward to reading more about your journey this year!

Thanks, Lesley!
That does sound very similar! I think what I’m needing to find is who is my audience? I guess I’ll just have to listen to His voice one day at a time and let Him lead me. He made me pretty flexible, so He may have many different audiences for me, and I just have to follow His lead.

Ruth, I like your word. 🙂 Love the order the Lord revealed to you that He’s been about the last 3 years. Listen, dwell, speak. Amen. So good, friend. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to hearing how God incorporates this word into your life this year. 🙂

Thanks, Brenda! He already has me writing a lot more than before. I suppose writing can be a form of speaking, too. But I really think He also wants me to really speak using the mouth He’s given me.
God bless you and give you peace!

Dear Ruth,
I also love the order of the words that God gave you: Listen, Dwell, then Speak. He does have such a perfect plan, when we wait and trust Him. Last year was my first time to listen for a word for the year, and He spoke stillness to me. And I too can see His order as my word for this year is sufficient. Only as I’ve been still before Him, have I begun to see how truly sufficient He is for me. Thank you for sharing these beautiful words and Scriptures.

Hi, Bettie! Thanks for stopping by and sharing how God has been working in your life as well! Stillness is so important if we want to hear from God.
I learned long ago that God’s grace is sufficient, but over the years I have come to experience it, and the HIM that gives it, over and over again. I have come to wonder why He says “sufficient”, in that, it seems like such an understatement! He is abundantly sufficient, and His grace is lavishly sufficient!!!
May the Lord bless you as you continue to be still before Him and learn of His sufficiency! 🙂

I love this post, Ruth! This year when it began in January I was getting the word “community” like I need to be doing things for the community, and that is what started the community prayers and community spotlight. To help encourage all of us to be there for each other.
I’m going to share this post on my Christian bloggers board and I am going to put this post in the community spotlight for May (which is any post that spoke to me in the month of May, and this certainly did) 🙂
