It was another one of those days…
…you know, where you do a bunch of dumb stuff?
I mean, tell me; how many times a day is normal to send a text to the wrong person?
And when you go to the bank, cash a check, and take the money to a business to pay a bill, aren’t you supposed to bring the bill with you?
How long ago was it when you were walking at the park, and your foot stepped just a little too far over the edge of the pavement, and down you went, sprawling like a klutz. You looked around, hoping no one saw that! (Oh Wait! That was me!!)
Yeah, I know.
I’ve done so many of these silly mistakes in my life! I can’t even remember them all, but I’ve learned that is best just to laugh at myself!
Like all the times I locked my keys in the car? Yep!
And the time I left the house while boiling eggs and returned to a burnt pan with exploded eggs and that smoky smell that took a few days to air out? Yeah, that too.
I mean, isn’t it better for us to laugh at ourselves hilariously than to cry or get angry and bent out of shape over it?
It doesn’t matter why we did those things,
- whether something distracted us
- or our glasses were dirty
- or our memory is poor when we get tired and stressed!
We’re human. We need to give ourselves (and others) a break!
God says,
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10
We need to humble ourselves and not take ourselves so seriously.
Proverbs 17:22 says,
“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” NIV
The Good News Translation says it this way,
“Being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time.“
So, next time it rains and rains, and you accidentally wear that pair of shoes that you should have gotten rid of because they have a hole in the sole??
Laugh.
Your umbrella turns inside out in the wind?
Laugh!
You look in the mirror and find that you’ve been smiling at people with a hunk of blueberry right there in your front teeth?
Crack up laughing, baby!! It’s okay! It happens to the best of us.
“To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.” William Arthur Ward
