“I gave My back to those who strike Me,
And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard;
I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting.
For the Lord GOD helps Me,
Therefore I am not disgraced;
Therefore I have set My face like flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.”
Isaiah 50:6,7 NASB
Thank You for suffering these abuses in my stead.
I don’t understand how You could have stood there unflinching and let them spit in Your face.
If it had been me, I would have been crying and nauseated, completely out of sorts, and in a panic!
I don’t even do well when people say mean things to me that I don’t feel I deserve. It makes me sad and sometimes a bit angry.
Well, You surely didn’t deserve what they did to You!
And what they did to You was not because You were weak or caught off guard. Rather, You had it planned that way all along!
Surely, if You were just a weak human being, You would have responded with anger at the injustice being done to You.
But You didn’t.
Because You aren’t.
You had planned it all along to suffer injustice as a substitutionary sacrifice to satisfy the legal demands of God’s justice so that You could offer us pardon and freedom from the hold that sin had on us.
Thank You that by Your perfect, holy sacrifice of Yourself as the substitutionary Lamb, You offer us forgiveness.
Your grace is a gift to us,
one we do not deserve,
but it was not free for You.
You bought this gift at a great, unimaginable price,
the price of great suffering,
the price of Your own life blood being spilled for us, for me.
Thank You just doesn’t seem adequate for what You suffered on my behalf.
It seems that the only response that even approaches being adequate is to receive the pardon that You offer, in faith, and to give You my whole life in return, as no longer serving myself but as being on call at all times to serve You in whatever ways You direct me to serve.
I give my life to You, Lord Jesus.
I only ask that You continually give me the strength and the ability to serve You in all the things that You call me to do. For surely You would not tell us to do things that You want us to do without equipping us to do them!
I also ask that You help me daily to remember Your sacrifice for me, that it was what love demanded of You.
And help me to love You in return with that same kind of love, a sincere love in my heart that demands sacrifice on my part.
For surely Your sacrifice was not just to be fire insurance to keep us out of Hell, but rather it was to bring us into relationship with You and to compel us to walk with You:
- as respectful sons and daughters,
- as beloved servants,
- as disciples learning from You and seeking daily to please You and You alone.
Lord, Your costly gift deserves our willing devotion to You, not so that we can try to pay You back, for that is impossible. Rather, You gave us the example of how to love You and how to love others. Help us to be worthy of the calling with which You call us.
In Your Holy Name,
