Have you ever noticed how many power poles look like a cross?
As I was driving along the other day I was thinking about that, and how the pole is not what brings us the power, even though it is necessary for the process.
- Rather, it holds the cables that bring us the power.
- Those power cables bring the power from the power plant no matter how far the customer lives from it.
It occurred to me that, in a way, the cross of Calvary was a bit like that. It is not the cross itself that gives us salvation and power to live for God.
Rather, it held the One who does, Jesus, who said:
“All power is given unto Me in heaven and on earth.” Matthew 28:18
God’s power to save, comes to us through the One who came from Heaven to hang on the cross, which held Him up from the earth so that He might bring all who would believe to Himself.
“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” John 12:32 NASB
Most of us do not demand an in-depth understanding of electricity before we are willing to just accept, plug in, and use the power. We don’t say, “Well, I can’t see it, so I don’t believe it exists.” Should it be any different with the power that God offers us to live our lives for His glory?
Also, some of us may think we have wandered too far away and done too many bad things. But God offers us this gift of forgiveness and the power to overcome the darkness of our hearts. Let’s just say that, symbolically, Jesus laid plenty of cable to reach everyone, no matter how far away they may be.
The way to plug in to Him is to come to Him in faith, humbly admitting your sinful state, and receiving His gift of pardon with confidence in Him.
“No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man (Jesus Christ).
As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” John 3:13-15 NASB
If you want to plug in to God today, you can talk to Him about it. You might pray a prayer something like this:
Dear Lord Jesus,
I am a sinner and have done many things that displease You. I don’t deserve to have You even listen to me. But I believe that Jesus died and took my place, the punishment for my sins. I believe that He is the Son of God and that He loved me that much. I believe He has the power to forgive me. Forgive me, Lord, and please give me the power to live for You.
