Where Do I Dwell?

We usually think of where we live as being a physical place. However, sometimes we can be in that physical place, but our minds are a thousand miles away!  We are bodily in that place, but our minds and emotions are in another place and even in another period of time!Kentucky trip reunion 2017-09-29 046

I think it’s safe to say that any of us who are old enough to be reading these words have had experiences where we have gotten stuck in anger, fear, worry, or any number of other negative emotions.

Might it be safe to say that we’ve dwelt there? Perhaps just for a couple of hours, perhaps overnight, perhaps for days or weeks or months or even years….?  Kentucky trip reunion 2017-09-29 150

Where do I dwell?

Where do you dwell?

The place we live on the globe is not so important as the place our hearts dwell in determining our state of mind, and ultimately, our happiness.

God has a good reason for telling us such things as:

  • “Do not let the sun go down on your anger.”  (Ephesians 4:26)
  • Forgive.  (Ephesians 4:32)
  • Fear not, for I am with you.  (Isaiah 41:10)
  • Give thanks unto the LORD, for He is good.  (Psalm 136:1)
  • Give and it will be given unto you.  (Luke 6:38)
  • Practice hospitality.  (Romans 12:13)

When we don’t do those things, chances are really good that we are doing their opposites, in which case, we would be:

  • dwelling in anger,
  • dwelling in unforgiveness,
  • dwelling in fear,
  • dwelling in unthankfulness,
  • dwelling in stinginess,
  • dwelling in self-serving attitudes and behaviors.

God knows that

dwelling in these negative mindsets will be

          harmful to us

               and to those we love.

We cannot be dwelling in these things

     and

truly be dwelling in the Lord

               at the same time.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty…

You will not be afraid of the terror by night,

For you have made the Lord, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.”  Psalm 91:1,5,9  NASB

In order to dwell in a place, we have to go there.

In order to stop dwelling in a place, we have to move or go to a new place.

Where are you dwelling?

Where am I dwelling?

Do we need to move away from the mental and spiritual places in which we have been dwelling?

Let’s leave behind the harmful places where we have been dwelling and run into the arms of Him who loves us!  ❤

Lord,

We want to stop dwelling in harmful negative emotions that are fueled by lies we have believed.  Please help us to understand and believe Your truths and to come to You to dwell in peace and safety.

  1. Hi Ruth. With you, my heart’s desire is to “run into the arms of Him who loves us.” It can be difficult as Satan is always trying to keep us from Him with his lies. Oh, how we constantly need God’s sufficient grace to dwell near to Him! Thank you for this encouragement. Love and hugs to you!

    1. You’re so right, Trudy! We need God’s grace every day, and He has a fresh supply waiting for us every morning! Great is His faithfulness!
Did you ever play Red Rover, Red Rover as a child? The other kids held hands so tightly to keep us from breaking through; we had to run extra fast and hard, with determination to make it. For us it was a game. But with our spiritual enemy it’s serious business. I pray we will run hard and with determination to break through in the power of Christ every day, running into the arms of Jesus by His grace.

  2. Thank you!! This really spoke to me as I’ve been struggling with finally realizing what my problem is…ever since I was a little girl I’ve felt fear…fear over some very negative things that occurred in my life..so I’m constantly telling my husband things are going good right now but I feel like I need to find something to worry about, it’s like I’ve grown complacent to fear so when all is well I literally search for something to fear because it’s my negative comfort zone..I’m 34 years old and have experienced fear ever since I can remember (it started with being raised by a sweet but epileptic mother, and a loving but alcohol and drug addicted father, a homicide occurred in front of our home when I was young, I was inappropriately touched numerous times by family friends and extended family before age 12, my dad’s death, etc.)….and it seriously just hit me yesterday that I’ve been brainwashed by fear…I know the scriptures, I know positive thinking but I can’t and don’t ever find peace in my heart to kill the fear…

    1. Thank you, sweet Alicia, for sharing this. I’m so sorry you had to go through those traumatic situations as a child. I’m so glad the Lord used this to speak to you.
I wish we could meet and have some chai and/or whatever your favorite beverage is and have a long conversation. But in lieu of that I will just mention a few things and pray for you as God continues to move in your heart to set you free.
      1. I understand the negative comfort zone. I ask myself why do I keep returning to certain negative tendencies. I think the answer lies in two places: a) the enemy of our souls knows our weak spots and attacks us there, and b) we let him. 2. The fact that we need to be set free reminds me of 2 Cor. 10:4,5. We have cooperated over the years in the building of a stronghold, stone upon stone. Stones of fear and worry are more obvious to us, but what about pride, in that we want to control and fix the situation instead of going to the Lord first for His solution? And what about stones of selfishness, in that I let myself go on in the illusion that life’s about me and what concerns me, and I push away thoughts of all that is good in the world? Stones of ungratefulness for how God has come through for us so many times, stones of unbelief, in that I’ve believed the devil’s lies that I am not worth it for God to come to my aid when God says otherwise, and stones of anger at God for not keeping those bad things from happening, etc. But the weapons of our warfare are mighty to the tearing down of strongholds!
      3. We have to cooperate with God. Ephesians 4:27 tells us not to give the devil a foothold, or opportunity, literally, a military campground for launching attacks. Any sin we dwell in will give him that opportunity. It’s like we’re leaving the door open for him, just a crack, we tell ourselves, but a crack is still open, and that’s all he needs.
      4. “The truth will set you free.” “And if the Son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed.”
      5. Check out my comment above to Trudy. I remember playing Red Rover and watching a compassionate adult or older child pick up a younger child who was obviously not going to make it through, and they rammed him through. God is our compassionate giant who is able and willing to ram us through the devil’s roadblocks. He delights in you!
Praying for you to overcome this fear and all the other parts of the stronghold that make it seem impossible. Praying for wisdom and victory! In Jesus’ name.

      1. Thank you so much! After I sent that message yesterday my initial thought was I know God is going to use Ruth to speak something beautiful and sure enough it happened. I also thought the same as you, it’d be soooo nice to just have a few hours of time together sipping something warm and conversing over this topic. I really really want to FEEL set free and in my head I know that Jesus’ work on the cross has already set me free but my heart is far from feeling it, so I need those prayers significantly. I always knew I had a problem with anxiety but actually pinpointing that it’s fear that has me chained down is something I just realized a few days ago…I’m going to print off your notes from the blog and study them, study those scriptures as well, and spend much time in prayer!!! Thank you, thank you..God brought about your post in perfect timing which doesn’t surprise me at all!!

        1. The bloopers are fixed! Lol 🙂
Oh, and if we ever do get together, I would love to have some peach cobbler, but you’ll have to make it gluten-free for me!
I’m giving you a link to a post I wrote a long time ago that addresses the feelings. It is important to learn the TRUTH about all your mental struggles: what does God say about it? Post those truths as reminders for yourself in various places. Believe them and speak your belief out loud. As truth moves in, the lies will have to flee. New feelings should eventually replace the old ones once you have gone through this process, but it may take quite a bit of time. There may be more depths to the lies that you have believed than you had realized. Don’t give up, don’t get discouraged, don’t let your guard down. Love you, sister! ❤

          1. I eaten gluten free too!!!;)
Thank you so much for all your encouragement and care. This makes me sooo motivated.
I had actually entertained the thought of seeing a counselor a while ago but continually brushed it off because I was always intimidated by the fact that they may not allow me to talk and share all of my feelings and they wouldn’t know the full extent of my concerns but the things you have offered and suggested make so much sense and address so many of my worries…praying to overcome fear!

            1. You’re making me hungry; oh wait, that was me that started it, wasn’t it? lol 😀
              No problem!
I’m so glad this was helpful!
As you’re praying through all this, it would be a good idea to pray also if the Lord would have you go to a good Biblical Christian counselor. I sent you some info via your blog email address in case you ever decide you want to go that route. Sometimes it’s good to have someone to talk with, and if God has someone like that for you, wait for it…Don’t be AFRAID to go see them! 😀
I’m praying for you, too. You are an overcomer through faith in Him and His Word.
              Blessings, dear sister!
