Day 29 – Thankful for beauty

I love beauty, don’t you? I’m so glad God gave us beauty! When I try to imagine a world with no beauty, I actually have certain images that flit across my mind’s eye.

The first is the outdoors in the dead of winter, mid-January, Christmas decorations all taken down, and no snow on the ground. Everything is brown or gray, including the sky.

The next is worse: pictures of Indonesia after the tsunami in December 2004. Out of a huge neighborhood, only one or two houses were still at least partially standing surrounded by total devastation.

I could go on, but maybe you agree with me that this lack of beauty is really depressing. We may feel we’re already surrounded by enough and have already seen enough lack of beauty to last a lifetime!

I hear you, and I agree. It seems that King Solomon agrees as well (Ecclesiastes 11:7,8). But after all his searching and disappointment, he wraps up the book with this:

Now all has been heard;

here is the conclusion of the matter:

Fear God and keep his commandments,

for this is the duty of all mankind.

For God will bring every deed into judgment,

including every hidden thing,

whether it is good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13,14 NIV

I’m thankful that I have had to go through un-beautiful times of my life, even though I groaned inwardly at the time.

One reason is that they caused me to turn my eyes to Jesus and to the Bible where much beauty dwells!

Also, have you noticed that beauty always seems to “pop”, appearing even more beautiful against a dark backdrop, like diamonds poured out on a piece of black velvet?

So, today I’m thankful for beauty and for how much better it looks when our soul needs to drink it in!

God made so much beauty in nature. We may see it in the

  • mountains,
  • the beach,
  • the waterfalls,
  • the sunset.

Or we may see it in

  • flower gardens,
  • in our pets,
  • in decorations, or
  • in someone’s smile and sparkling eyes.

Sometimes we need to just stop looking so much at the depressing stuff and turn our eyes and the focus of our hearts to the beauty that God does give us, which will seem all the more beautiful against the dark backdrop.

What about you? Are you thankful for beauty? Do you think you would appreciate beauty as much as you do if there were no difficult situations to compare the wonderful situations to?

Thank You, God, for giving us all sorts of beauty! You are certainly a God of beauty, and You rejoice our hearts with it! Please help us to open our eyes and focus on Your beauty so that everything else will fade away at the glory of You!
