I know not everyone likes thunder, but I’ve loved it for a long time. I don’t remember a time when I was afraid of it, unless you count the couple of times that it crashed right outside my window in the middle of the night and woke me up from a deep sleep. But anything crashing so nearby and so loudly would scare me if it woke me up from a deep sleep. So I don’t count that.
Tonight I went out into the cold 41°F rain to buy a few items at the grocery store. It had already been raining calmly for a few hours.
Right after I parked the car and got out, lightening lit up the sky, and a couple of seconds later loud thunder rumbled and rolled across the sky. It made me smile with joy. I know it was heard inside the store, too, because a man I believe to be a manager asked me after I got inside if it had thundered.
Thunder makes me think of the presence of God. It actually makes me feel safe.
There are quite a few verses that talk about God’s voice sounding like thunder. For example:
“And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps.” Revelation 14:2 NASB
“The voice of the LORD is over the waters; The God of glory thunders…” Psalm 29:3 NKJV
And, Jesus said,
“‘Father, glorify Your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
“Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered.” John 12:28,29 NKJV
Today I am thankful for thunder, for the presence of God with man, and for the voice of God speaking to His children, whether loudly through the storm or whispering quietly in the stillness of our hearts.
I love thunder too, and am so grateful for the word of a God that is alive and speaks to us loudly and softly.

Me too! I like to play it on the piano and try to add some thunder into the bass where it says “thunder”. 😄

When I was little, thunder scared me. That changed when my pastor preached on Psalm 29! He said he imagined David writing that psalm as a storm passed, and ever since, like you said, thunder brings joy to my heart and makes me grin! Love the reminder of God’s presence and voice – and His love!

Yay! Aren’t you glad you heard that message?! Now we can relate to the words of “How Great Thou Art” and break into praise instead! We are safe in Christ.

Haha, yes, I am glad! That hymn definitely became more meaningful to me once I loved storms. And what a precious promise to meditate on!

Oh yes! I love thunder – and lightening. And storms, any kind of storm. A good memory is many times standing with my Dad in the open garage watching the storms coming over the fields. Awesome!

Me too! That’s a great memory! I’ve actually stood out in the dark with an umbrella a couple of times trying to video record lightning and thunder during a storm. 😊

I love the sound of storms, but I had not thought of thunder in quite this way before, so thank you, Ruth. I enjoyed reading this and hear you tell of your love for thunder and how it makes you smile and of how you feel safe. I would never have combined “thunder” with smiling or with safety before. So, now I am going to think of it in a new way. 🙂

Thank you, Sue, for this encouragement that what I’ve shared makes a difference for you!
I do have a healthy respect for the dangers of lightning when it is close by; I know how to gauge the distance and do not go outside barefoot or stand under a tall or lone tree. But staying within those parameters, I know that God is near, and I love to get as close as possible and watch the amazing shows He puts on! “I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed…” I think the author of “How Great Thou Art” also found joy in thunder, since his response was “then sings my soul…”! 😊
