“Open my eyes so I can truly see the marvelous things in your law.” Psalm 119:18 NET
The thing is, that after many years of excellent eyesight, I started having to wear glasses for reading, and then my eyesight got worse and worse as time went on until I ended up with a restriction on my drivers license. I was not happy about that at the time, but now that I’m used to my bifocals, I would not want to drive without them anymore.
So, since I can’t see well at all to do things like reading, computer work, and even eating,
I am very thankful to have glasses. Life would be very difficult without them!
Sometimes our spiritual eyesight is not so good either. I’m not so sure that God gives us spiritual glasses, though! The psalmist asked God to “open” or “uncover” his spiritual eyes so that he might see, behold, or even contemplate the wonders of God’s instructions.
Spiritual insight definitely takes spiritual assistance.
“These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 NIV
He is the Teacher, the Counselor, the opener of our eyes, the One who convicts of sin so that the dirt can be removed and sight restored!
Jesus told the disciples, “and the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and remind you of all things that I said to you.” John 14:26 YLT
So, today I am thankful for my glasses that help my failing eyes to see clearly! And, I am thankful for the indwelling Holy Spirit who helps me see (understand) clearly the wonderful things in God’s Word that I otherwise would not be able to comprehend!
