Some time ago I got a raw egg out of the refrigerator to make some gluten-free pancakes and a leftover boiled egg to eat by itself. I set the eggs on the counter, and went to do something else.
When I came back to the kitchen, I thought I remembered which egg was which. I picked up an egg to crack for the pancakes and told myself “this is the raw egg”. I hit it on the side of the sink and found, to my surprise, that it actually was the boiled egg!
Obviously, I did not make pancakes with the boiled egg. That would not have worked. I’m just glad that I didn’t try to do any aggressive cracking of the raw egg, thinking that it was the boiled egg!
I really thought that I was holding the raw egg in my hand. I told myself that this was the raw egg. I believed that I could use it to make pancakes.
But I was wrong.
I was thinking about how we can call other things whatever we want to, thinking that it’s the truth, too, and be convinced that we are right, but still be wrong.
When it comes to things that count for eternity, it is important that we get it right.
I’ve learned from experience that people will talk about God, going to church, miracles, prayer, being born again, and even Jesus and be talking about something totally different from what the Bible teaches! (If you ask them to define the terms they are using, you might be surprised!)
God warns us to be careful about what we choose to believe.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.” 1 John 4:1-3 NASB
“Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus is accursed’; and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:3 NASB
“For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.
And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.” 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 BSB
I urge you to spend time getting to know the truth of God’s Word, the Bible, so that you will be able to recognize the counterfeit when you see, hear, or read it.
The counterfeit is not all it’s cracked up to be! 😁
Today I’m thankful for these lessons from a boiled egg!
I’m thankful we can read God’s Word and discover Who He truly is!
I’m thankful that He will help us know the truth and the truth will set us free!
How about you? Are you thankful for God’s word, the Bible? How well do you know what it says for yourself? Do you know it well enough to know the counterfeit when you see, read, or hear it? Or do you become confused when you hear something different from what you’ve heard before? What better time than now to begin reading God’s Word, praying that God will give you understanding as you read and study it?
