My journey to learning how to pray has been quite a long one. As a child I learned a couple of mealtime prayers and kind of listened to other people praying, sometimes. But I think I must have listened enough to get a basic idea that I could talk to God, and that He would listen.
When I got older, I started realizing that there are a lot of prayers written in the Scriptures, and some of them became my own heart’s cry to the Lord.
I think this is a very good thing. I don’t think that the Lord placed those prayers in the Holy Script just to inform us of what someone else prayed.
For example, the Psalms contain many prayers, and they were meant to be sung to the Lord, effectively, they were meant to be personalized by others throughout the centuries, even millennia.
So, for those of you who are not so acquainted with this form of praying, I have decided to start a series of scripture prayers that you can make your own.
Won’t you join me?
Scripture:
“Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Your hand.
Do not forget the afflicted. You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Your hand.
The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan.
Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer, Seek out his wickedness until You find none.
O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror.” Psalm 10:12, 14, 15, 17, 18 NASB
Prayer:
Rise up, O Lord God, Jehovah! Lift up Your hand to help the afflicted (or me, or the name of someone you know who is in need).
You have seen the mischief that has been done against me/him/her. You’ve seen the harassment, the difficulties, and the angst being caused us. You’ve heard the false accusations. Please take it into Your hand to help us!
For in our weakness and misfortune we commit ourselves to You. You are the Helper of the orphan and of the oppressed.
Please take away the power of the wicked and of those oppressing others through their evil ways. Hold them accountable for their actions and stop them!
Oh, Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble. You know our hopes for freedom, peace, and rest.
We trust You to strengthen our hearts, to hear our prayer, to vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, so that they (we) will be set free and that those who have oppressed them (us) will no longer cause terror.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
I always love reading your prayers…they’re so beautifully worded! Thanks for sharing Ruth! I’ll call you this morning 😉

Thank you, Alicia! My hope is that others will learn more about God and will be able to advance in their faith and in their own prayer lives. I think God expects us to learn to pray, in part, through the prayers of Scripture. This can give us confidence as to what God gives us permission to ask of Him. And, of course, we can also learn, in part, to pray through the prayers of others.
The important thing is that we move on from just reading the prayers, to praying them for our own circumstances, for the people in our own entourage, and for those for whom the Lord has laid a burden on our heart.
Looking forward to it!

This is a beautiful idea to encourage. The Psalms are my favorite camping spot in the word because they are out and out real about life. Following in their footsteps towards the Lord is powerful. Thank you for sharing, Ruth.

Amen! Glory to the living and eternal Christ! Amen! After reading each scripture on mornings that the Holy Spirit leads me to I often mediate, preach the word to myself and pray it back where I include someone or myself. Blessings to you sis! 🙂
