I remember as a child waking up one night with the poison ivy on my leg itching like crazy! I crept quietly through the dark to the medicine cabinet where I knew I would find the poison ivy aerosol spray. Still in the dark, I grabbed it and began spraying it on the poison ivy. It initially gave a cooling effect, but then, as it started to itch again, I sprayed some more, and some more. Suddenly, I perceived a smell which seemed different than what I had expected, and I realized that I had accidentally grabbed my mom’s aerosol underarm deodorant instead of the poison ivy spray.
Now I can look back and laugh! It wasn’t a big deal; no one got hurt. But I did waste product and the money that it had cost for the product.
A much more recent mistake that I made in the dark was putting on what I thought was my roll-on underarm deodorant without turning on the light. No excuse. I just thought I knew what I was doing, so I didn’t turn it on.
A few minutes later, I began to wonder why the deodorant was not drying like usual, and then it began to burn a bit. I realized that I had accidentally grabbed the roll-on Max Freeze ®, which is like an Icy Hot ® product. Uh oh! Argh!
I rushed quickly to wash it off before it became extremely uncomfortable or even painful. As it was, it only caused me some minor, albeit unnecessary, discomfort.
A third mistake I made in the dark was the night before Mother’s Day. I was walking half asleep through the kitchen to the bathroom, when to my shock, I hit my shin against the dishwasher door, which was open because my sweet teenage son was trying to surprise me by doing the dishes in the middle of the night. I did not respond well. It hurt so bad, and I hurt my son’s feelings, even though it was my mistake.
But he was so intent on giving his gracious gift, that he got up two more times during the night to get as much done as he could, even though it made him very tired the next day.
So, what does this have to do with you, besides giving you a good laugh for the day?
Sometimes, as we stumble through the darkness of our lives, we forget to read God’s Word or think on what He has taught us. We stumble around content to see with only the night light.
Some of those times, we just make silly mistakes that don’t hurt anyone aside from maybe wasting a bit of time or money or bringing discomfort to our relationships because we think we know what we’re doing when we really don’t. When we hurt others, we ultimately hurt ourselves and God, as well. Then, we then have to go quickly and do cleanup patrol and ask for forgiveness before it really starts to burn.
Other times we actually hurt ourselves and others, due to our proud, angry responses that come from superimposing our will on God’s. We hit up against a wall of opposing opinions, and we desire to be in control instead of recognizing Him as the Sovereign Lord and Ruler of our lives.
But even when we grieve Him, He remains intent on blessing us, like my son graciously did for me, in spite of our unloving responses to Him. For those who have received Jesus as Savior, He has entered into a covenant relationship with us, and He will always be faithful, even when we are not.
The Lord reminded me of something that John the Baptist said concerning the Lord Jesus:
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30
and He also reminded me of the teaching in 1 Peter 2:9 that God has made us a holy priesthood
“so that (we) may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called (us) out of darkness into His marvelous light;”
He has called us.
- Will we we answer Him?
- Will we pray and ask Him to shed light on our life each day?
- Will we search His Word which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path? (Psalm 119:105)
- Will we draw near to Him, leaving behind our selfish responses, and surrendering our will to Him?
- Will we seek His reign and His control in our lives instead of exalting ourselves?
I pray that we will.
Lord, please help us to stop willingly walking in the dark in our daily lives. Help us to turn on the light of Your Word and Your will in our lives instead of thinking we know how to live right without Your help. Help us to seek your help with the everyday problems, so You can shed Your light on exactly what Your way is for us in each and every situation. We ask You for Your wisdom, and we surrender to You as Lord. May Your reign come and Your will be done in our daily lives as it is in Heaven. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen

I find that I have to be extra careful to stay in God’s work when life is going along “just fine.” I need Him at all times. And sometimes my darkest times do not necessarily seem dark.

You’re right, Brittany. I’ve found myself in that spot as well.
May the Lord help us to go through each day with our vision clear, with our eyes open and focused on Him.
Have a blessed weekend! 😀

I am such a chicken in the dark I turn on the lights. You did make me laugh and also learn. “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30
I need to concentrate on that verse in this season of my life.

I’m glad I made you laugh; you know, laughter is good medicine!
That verse, and “Thy kingdom come, they will be done,” keep popping into my mind lately. In fact, I think it was yesterday morning, when I turned on the radio, David Jeremiah immediately said, “Thy kingdom come Thy will be done…”
Have a blessed weekend in His will. 🙂

When I first began doing youth work I went to a conference that took place in a really old house out in the middle of nowhere. On the first evening we were playing a game in the dark, and it was really dark, much more than I was used to. Eventually it got too much and I went to turn on the light, but as I pressed what I thought was the light switch, I set the fire alarm off! (Fortunately I was able to turn it back off and as it was dark and I kept quiet, no-one knew it was me 🙂 ) Stumbling around in the darkness is not much fun!

Haha, Lesley! That’s funny! I take it the fire department did not arrive looking for where the fire was? 🙂 It’s good to be able to look back at embarrassing moments and laugh! Thanks for sharing your story here! 🙂

I made the mistake of walking upstairs to get ready for bed with all the lights off. I was carrying a glass of water with me. I stepped on a tablet with a keyboard that one of my kids had left on the stairs and spilled some water on it. Oops! Luckily, there was no damage, but it reminded me it is much smarter to use my lights! I love your analogies. You’re so right. Thank for these reminders and encouragement.

Hi, Mandy! I’m so glad there was no damage to the tablet or keyboard and that you didn’t get hurt when you stepped on it! That’s another whole issue at my house; NOTHING is allowed to be left on the stairs. But when you have kids, you can never be sure that they will follow the rules, so yes, it’s probably better to turn on the lights! I try to check before I go to bed at night to be sure walkways through the house are clear, just in case, (reminds me of Ephesians 4:26) but sometimes the kids don’t fall asleep well, or they stay up doing their homework or reading a book, so the landscape can change without notice.
Thanks for your visit and for sharing your story! Blessings on you as you walk in His light through this week and beyond! 🙂

I’ve learned from past experience NEVER to walk around our house in my bare feet when it’s dark. You just never know . . .
So thankful that we have the light of Truth to guide us — when we are willing to follow.

I know, Michele, right? A couple of decades ago I lived in a house that would get water in the crawl space when it rained hard. More than once, I stepped on a slug in the dark. That’s just gross! 😝
But if I had turned on the light, I could have avoided that problem.

I love this encouragement! It’s so true, that if we only shine the light, we can avoid so much pain and discomfort!!

This is a fabulous story! I can envision myself doing the same thing! LOL- love it!
You have also tied it to God’s Word so nicely. It is tempting to wake each morning and check my phone or turn on the computer before the rest of the house wakes, but talking to the outside world is not turning on the light. Only when I prioritize God’s Word, and spending time with Him, can I walk in the light. It can be fun to stay in the dark, by consulting social media instead of spending quiet time with God. But, reaching out to others does nothing for my spiritual growth, for my day, or for my loved ones who need prayer.
Thank you for the encouragement today. 😀

Hi, Erin! Thanks so much for your visit and your comment! You are so right. Talking to the outside world can be tempting, but it can leave an empty feeling when no one is responding, an empty feeling that we never get when we seek the Lord first and foremost in faith, on His terms, and according to His word. If I seriously weigh fun vs. joy, I have to take the joy, then I can pass it on to others who need a boost.
I visited your blog and have bookmarked it so I can go back again and check it out some more.
Have a great weekend! 🙂

You have some great stories about things you’ve done in the dark. 🙂 I’m sure I have done similar things through the years, either in the dark or the light. ha. This is a great lesson to make use of the light that God wants to shine on us if we’ll just turn it on! Thanks for sharing this.

You have a point there, Lisa; we can, and certainly do, make mistakes in the light as well, whether through inattention, poor planning, poor judgment, being in a hurry, not consulting God first, or even the carelessness of others, etc. 🙂 Thanks for your visit today, and may the Lord help us both to walk carefully in the Light of His Word, with both eyes open, and our ears attuned to His voice.

Images of stumbling in the darkness makes me cringe when I think about stepping on my kids’ legos — ouch!!! But more so, I see how I could stumble around spiritually as well, without relying on God’s Word in those times I either think I know best or simply don’t make time to seek Him.
Thanks for this reminder to “turn on the light” and quit stumbling around.
Blessings to you!

Ouch, Marva! Yes, hard plastic with corners were not made to be walked on in bare feet!!
May the Lord help us to do a better job of consulting Him before we take a step, and may we remember to use our spiritual armor, which includes the shoes of the gospel of peace.
Here’s another post that talks of stepping on something even worse than Lego’s with bare feet:
