Scripture prayers #9

Scripture is full of examples of prayers that others have prayed, which God apparently thought were so important for us to know about that He had them written down for us to read all these centuries and even millennia later!

Sometimes, when we sit down and read these, the words fit our situation perfectly, and we can pray them word for word. Other times, our situation may be a little different, or the wording may need a little paraphrasing to fit the way we talk with God, and that is okay.

Today I’ll be using Psalm 30:1-5 to write my own, similar prayer. Feel free to practice praying like this, changing bits here and there to fit your own situation.

1I will extol You, O LORD, for You have lifted me up,

And have not let my enemies rejoice over me.

2O LORD my God,
I cried to You for help, and You healed me.

3O LORD, You have brought up my soul from Sheol;
You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit.

4Sing praise to the LORD, you His godly ones,
And give thanks to His holy name.

5For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for a lifetime;
Weeping may last for the night,
But a shout of joy comes in the morning.” NASB

I will lift up Your name in praise, LORD, for You have lifted me up and given me victory over the enemy! You are my strong Hero, my kind and loving Savior!

Lord, I cried to You for help in my time of need, and You came to rescue me! More times than I can remember, You healed me and encouraged me and taught me the way I should go.

Lord, there were many times when I would have been glad if You had said that it was time for me to come home to be with You, but You knew that I was tired and discouraged and just wanted to give up. You knew I couldn’t see it yet, but You still had work for me to do here. Thank You for picking me up, for breathing life into my soul again, and for lifting me up out of the pit and leading me in the way You want me to go.

I sing praise to You, Lord, with Your people whom You have cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ! We don’t deserve Your forgiveness, for You are Holy, but by Your grace You have forgiven us, and we give You thanks!

For Your anger was just for a moment and completely motivated by Your love. Your favor lasts for our whole life. We may have wept bitterly for a time, but You brought light to overcome the darkest night, and with it joy in our hearts and a song on our lips!

You, LORD, are wonderful, and I praise Your name!

Thank You, Lord!

Amen!

  1. This part right here, “Lord, there were many times when I would have been glad if You had said that it was time for me to come home to be with You, but You knew that I was tired and discouraged and just wanted to give up. You knew I couldn’t see it yet, but You still had work for me to do here. Thank You for picking me up, for breathing life into my soul again, and for lifting me up out of the pit and leading me in the way You want me to go”, really echoed my heart sentiments when my son hit puberty! But God…now the phase has passed and there is joy in my heart 😊🙌🏽
