Day 90-Thankful for our son’s safe arrival and for long-distance communication/prayer

Yesterday my husband and I took our son to the airport for his flight back to university. He did well in his first semester, and we very much enjoyed having him home. But now it’s time for him to get back to his studies.

I admit to standing there watching intently every last glimpse of him as he went through the security line.

Once he was out of sight, my husband and I went up for a bite to eat at a restaurant where we could see the outside of the gate where he would board. We watched as the plane that he would board pulled up to the gate, waited for his text message saying that he was on the plane, and watched some more as his plane taxied down the runway. Only when the plane was in the air and out of sight did we leave.

 

It kind of reminds me of the disciples on the Mount of Olives, standing there watching Jesus as He ascended into heaven.

“after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.'” Acts 1:9-11

The phrase “gazing intently” reminds me of a time that this same son who just went back to school was still very small. I had gotten him a shiny Mylar balloon, and he accidentally let go of it. We literally stood there “gazing intently” at the balloon as it got smaller and smaller and then disappeared out of sight.

I imagine the disciples watching Jesus getting smaller and smaller as He got higher and higher up, and then He disappeared behind a cloud, just like the airplane.

The balloon will never come back.

If God wills, our son will return this summer. We have to wait a while before we can see him again. In the meantime, we can talk to him by phone, text, email, and various other tech methods. We will think of him each time we go into his room, each time we find something of his lying around, each time we do something that he did with us.

Jesus for sure is coming back! If God wills, it will be soon! We have to wait until we can see Him again. In the meantime, those who have trusted Him for salvation have a direct line to talk with Him, since He is always with us in Spirit! That direct line does not require a computer, electricity, or any type of technology.
It only requires that we be His child and think of Him often and talk to Him in our heart about anything and everything that is going on in our life.

I want to talk to Him more, don’t you? I want to think of Him more and anticipate His arrival. Won’t it be wonderful to see our Savior face to face!

Today, I’m thankful that our son arrived safely at His university. I’m thankful that God took care of him and his luggage. And I’m thankful that I can talk to him often. I’m also thankful that I can talk with God anytime and anywhere!
